Settings and keyboard shortcuts

Make Antimatter look and behave the way you like: themes, display, language and time, and keyboard shortcuts.

Open your settings

Click your picture at the top right of the window, then Profile & settings. You can also press Ctrl+Shift+A (⌘+Shift+A on a Mac), or type /settings. Your settings are saved as you change them, and follow you on every device you sign in from.

The settings are grouped in panes:

Under Plugins, some apps add their own settings, such as Calls for your microphone and camera. If you are a system administrator, the settings also link to the System Console.

Themes and display

Choose a theme

In Settings › Appearance, under Theme, pick Dark, OLED (pure black, for dark rooms and OLED screens), Light, or System, which follows your computer's light or dark mode, even when it changes during the day.

To make your own, click Custom. Under Custom colours, set each colour: Community rail, Sidebars, Chat area, Inputs & cards, Borders, Text, Secondary text, Accent and Links. Start from Antimatter resets them.

Share a theme

A theme can be passed on as a short code starting with am1:. Under Share a theme, click Copy my theme's code and send it to someone. To use a code you received, paste it in the field and click Apply.

Display

  • Message display: Compact, which fits more on screen, without pictures and with tighter rows; Standard; or Spacious, which leaves more room around messages and in the lists of the sidebar and members.
  • Availability on pictures: show whether people are online on their pictures in messages.
  • Share when you were last online: let others see "Last online …".
  • Message width: Full width, or Centred for easier reading on a large screen.
  • Show people as: Username, Nickname or Full name, for your direct and group messages. Each community's admins choose how people show in its own channels (see Community settings).
  • 24-hour clock: show times as 16:00 instead of 4:00 PM.
  • Group unread channels: gather unread channels in an Unreads section at the top of the sidebar.
  • Topics under a channel: how long a topic keeps showing under its channel after it was last active: 1 day, 3 days, 1 week (the default), 2 weeks or 1 month.

How many direct messages Open conversations lists is no longer a setting here: drag its own top edge instead (see Direct and group messages).

The classic interface

Antimatter's interface is the one this guide describes. If your administrator allows it, Web interface in Settings › Appearance lets you switch to Classic (legacy), the older interface kept for compatibility, and back to Fusion. The choice applies to every browser you sign in from. Menus and buttons differ in the classic interface.

Accessibility

Settings › Accessibility makes Antimatter easier to read and to use. Antimatter also follows your system's reduced motion setting.

  • Simplified interface: less on screen at once. Buttons and rows are bigger, there are no animations, the member list stays closed until you open it, counts show only for mentions, and fewer buttons show over messages. Everything stays within reach.
  • Colour names: give each person's name in messages a colour of their own, to tell people apart at a glance. It is off by default, since roles already colour the names of the people who hold them.

Message settings

Settings › Messages sets how conversations look and how you write. Depending on your server, it offers:

  • Keep replies in threads: thread replies stay in their thread instead of also showing in the channel.
  • Turn emoticons into emoji: show :) and <3 as emoji.
  • Times in your time zone: highlight times written in messages, with your own time when you point at them.
  • Send with Ctrl+Enter: Enter starts a new line, and Ctrl+Enter sends.
  • Rich text editor (beta): see formatting as it will look while you write.
  • Under Reading: Open unread conversations at (Where I left off or The newest message), Show images expanded, Link previews (a preview card for websites linked in messages), One-click reactions, Join and leave messages, and Message formatting (turn it off to see messages as plain text).

Language and time zone

In Settings › Language & time, choose the Language of the interface from the list. Antimatter switches at once.

Your Time zone is shown below it, usually set automatically from your computer. To change it, click Change…: this opens the time zone setting in the classic settings window, where you can turn off the automatic time zone and pick one.

Your time zone matters to others too: it is how Antimatter shows them your local time, and warns them when it is night for you.

Advanced settings

  • Streamer mode: hide your email address and conversation previews, and silence desktop notifications, for example while you share your screen.
  • Developer mode: add Copy ID to the menus of messages, channels, communities and people, for the API and bots.
  • Sync drafts: keep the messages you haven't sent yet on the server, to finish them on another device. It is on by default.
  • Under Performance debugging, when your server offers it: Turn off plugins in this browser and Don't send typing notices, useful when something misbehaves.
